Due to its high operating cost, the clientele targeted by Polynesia must be first of all a clientele for which price is not a selection criteria for choosing its vacation destination. Today several types of clients are not very affected by prices and golfers are part of them. Through its International popularity, golf is a product with strong appeal, its enthusiasts are always curious to discover a new course, especially if this course bears a famous signature. The presence of golf courses in sufficient numbers makes it possible to extend the tourists' length of stay and to generate a real "returning" market, as golfers do not hesitate to return if they appreciated the course. But in order to develop this niche, which is particularly profitable for tourism, we have to make sure that French Polynesia becomes a true golfing destination. This implies at least three or four golf courses located on several islands. The fact of being perceived as a golf destination would also make it easier to sell the destination as such, and to organize vacations built around golfing. Golfing is plaid very much on our main tourists source markets (USA, Japan, Europe), since out of the 70 millions of licensed golf player in the world, the United States counts 37 millions of them, Japan 13 and Europe 6.9. According to forecasts, by 2010, golf will have over 85 millions licensed players in the world. Unfortunately, French Polynesia did not do much to develop the "golf target", with its only golf course of Atimaono on the island of Tahiti, a situation about to change with the recent opening of the Moorea golf course and a golf course project on the island of Taha’a. The proximity of the lagoon and the mountains, the variety of scenery has already inspired Jack Nicklaus, and other famous architects will not fail to consider the wealth of our islands in order to offer to golf enthusiasts unique courses within an exceptional environment. |
